The unique thing about this cell phone is the built-in camera. Japanese phone users allowed to pick and choose own OS

NTT DoCoMo and Intel will publish Wednesday a set of specifications that will allow users to load a second operating system onto their cellphones, the companies said Tuesday.

The specifications add a second, open domain to the phone's architecture that is different from the default domain containing the basic operating system. Users could install an additional operating system or applications in the second domain and switch to them using a controller in the phone, Masanori Goto, a spokesman for DoCoMo said.

Most of the Japanese carrier's handsets are based on the Symbian or Linux operating systems, but phones built to the new specifications would be able to run other operating systems, such as Windows Mobile or additional applications, said Goto.

The controller, which handles switching between the two domains, will ensure that basic call functions continue to be available while the second domain is active so that users don't miss any calls.

The specifications, which DoCoMo has dubbed "OSTI" (open and secure terminal initiative), are primarily aimed at benefitting corporate customers who might want to supplement the phone's basic software with customized applications. It will also be possible to set a security policy for the handset's second domain.

If you're thinking of using your PC to play high-definition Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD movies then you might have to think again.

While computer drives for both blue-laser formats make PC playback a possibility, you'll need to have a high-performance PC if you want to watch the majority of movies. Even then, some movies might not playback smoothly, manufacturers of multimedia playback and burning software suites said at this week's Ceatec show in Japan.

HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc allow the use of three compression systems: MPEG2, VC1 or MPEG4 AVC. To date, most movies have used the latter but that's the hardest for PCs to process, said Noritaka Baba, a manager at CyberLink. The company produces the Power DVD software and other similar multimedia suites.

CyberLink recommends that consumers have at least an Intel 3.2GHz Pentium D processor, which is one of the fastest processors that Intel makes. For laptop PCs, the company recommends at least a 2GHz Core Duo T2500 processor for playback of MPEG4 AVC encoded content. Discs using the VC1 codec can be played back with slightly less powerful hardware and MPEG2 encoded video requires the least amount of processing power, he said.

In a demonstration on the HD DVD booth at Ceatec, a computer was playing the movie "Shinobi." Encoded in MPEG4 AVC at about 20Mbps (bits per second) it required about 70 percent of the power of the 3.2GHz Pentium D processor for playback, said Kazutaka Aiso, manager of the OEM sales group at Nero AG's Japan unit.

He said that of all the software on the market there is one title that won't playback smoothly on a PC. The title, "Yozakura," was the first HD DVD movie on the market in Japan and consists of high-definition images of Japanese cherry blossoms. The video on the disc averages around 30Mbps and that's just too much for today's PCs to handle, he said.

CyberLink and InterVideo, which produces the WinDVD software, also reported problems playing that title.

The problems only apply to playback of high-definition video because processing of the video needs to be done in real time. Consumers can get away with much less powerful hardware if they want to burn HD DVD or Blu-ray Disc media — it will simply take longer to complete the task as the processor's computing power drops, said Baba.

The advice of the software makers is borne out by the first computers to feature drives for the new disc formats.

Sony's Vaio L computer, which was launched earlier this week at the show and includes a Blu-ray Disc drive, runs on Core 2 Duo processors running at between 1.73GHz and 2.16GHz. NEC's Valuestar X, which is also based on a Blu-ray Disc drive, runs a 3.4GHz Pentium D processor. Toshiba's HD DVD-based Qosmio G30 has a 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo processor inside.

Sony recalls own batteries now — likely to revise profit forecast

Sony has added its name to a growing list of computer makers recalling laptop PC batteries made by one of its own subsidiaries.

The Tokyo-based company said it will offer replacements for around 90,000 battery packs sold with models of its Vaio PCs in Japan and China. The battery packs have the model names VGP-BPS2B and VGP-BPS3A. The former was used with PCs sold in China while the latter was used in Vaio T-series laptops sold in Japan and in models sold overseas, Sony said in a statement.

Sony is planning to widen the recall to battery packs sold with PCs in other countries but has yet to finalize those details, said Daichi Yamafuji, a spokesman for Sony in Tokyo.

The VGP-BPS2B is used with some models of Vaio AR, FE, FS and SZ-series laptops while the VGP-BPS3A is used with Vaio T-series machines, according to information from Sony and a search of its website.

Earlier in the day the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business newspaper said the Sony battery exchange would reach around 300,000 battery packs by the time it had been announced worldwide. Sony did not comment on the newspaper report.

With its Tuesday announcement, Sony becomes the seventh company to recall or offer exchanges on laptop PC battery packs. All the batteries include cells made at Sony Energy Tech in Japan. The cells are thought to contain metallic particles, which under certain circumstances could cause a short circuit resulting in the battery catching fire.

The recalls began in mid-August when Dell said 4.1 million batteries shipped with its laptops contained the cells. Within two weeks Apple recalled 1.8 million battery packs. Those two recalls remain the largest of the nine announced by seven companies over the last two months.

In late August Sony said its cost for the recalls would be between ¥20 billion and ¥30 billion (US$167 million and $251 million). Earlier Tuesday it said it is considering revising its profits forecast for the year, in part because of the battery recall. Sony is due to announce its half-year earnings next week.

How not to bow in Japan, Sony style

When Sony met Tokyo reporters last month to finally explain the battery debacle that kept the company in the headlines for more than two months it raised eyebrows not for what it said but for what it did, or rather didn't do.

In a country where the image one projects on the rest of society is vitally important, Sony executives on-stage surprised some with the bow they gave when offering their apology to consumers.

Yutaka Nakagawa, executive deputy president of Sony, made his apology to consumers and customers and then bowed slightly while remaining seated. It wasn't the full-on bow of humility that's become a common site on the evening news here in recent months as Japan has swung from one corporate scandal to another.

Apologizing and bowing is something of an art form in Japan. A simple "I'm sorry" won't do. If you don't get just the right balance of humility in your words the apology risks being treated with contempt. Bowing is equally important. The angle to which you bow and the time you bow establishes, in the event of an apology, just how sorry you are.

Consider this explanation, which still holds true today, from "The Japanese," a book published in 1934 by the top-class Fujiya Hotel to help explain the country and its "mysterious" ways to visitors: "On meeting on the street, for instance, two Japanese, especially women, bend double for what appears to a foreigner to be a dozen times in greeting each other.

'How do you do, Miss Suzuki?' Mrs. Sato asks, and she bows, when the addressee bows low too, saying, 'How do you do, Mrs. Sato?' or 'I am well, thank you.' 'I missed the meeting with you the other day,' one says with an apologetic bow, and the other responds with 'And we also missed you,' accompanied with a bow. 'How is your baby? Is she all right now?' 'She is all right, thank you." And both bow to each other. In this way they may bow five or six times and even more for anything and everything they may have to thank or make an apology for."

Reporters were already questioning Sony's handling of the crisis. Neither Howard Stringer, CEO, or Ryoji Chubachi, president and CEO of the electronics business, had appeared in front of the media since the battery problems surfaced in August and at the late-October news conference they were also no-shows. For some, the bow was confirmation that the company wasn't really sorry at all.

Sony counters that the criticism is unwarranted and that observers are reading too much into the bow. The news conference was about explaining the battery problem. It wasn't held for the sole purpose of apologizing and so the bow, to which thought had been given, was deemed appropriate, it said.

Nowhere on Earth do brand goods go down better than in Japan, with so-called designer labels stuck on everything from special-edition Hello Kitty keychains to cross-branded fast food, so NTT DoCoMo’s new Dolce & Gabbana handset is in good company.

For ¥75,000, label obsessives can pick up a gold D&G M702iS, AKA the Motorola RAZR localized for Japan. Being such an exclusive phone, it’s available not in shops but only online, either by i-mode or through DoCoMo’s website, and in bricks-and-mortar D&G stores. In Japan, entry to the latter is granted only after a credit check, we’re told

Considering that the identical, non-branded RAZR is currently selling for less than one quarter that price, the brand benefits seem pretty limited. There’s an eel skin case, a D&G strap, a couple of on-screen graphics and, “four original ring tones … selected by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.”

Needless to say, anyone still interested in flying to Japan to pick up the new gold wonder before the offer disappears forever at the end of May probably doesn’t need reminding of the old saying about money and sense.

PSP and iPod video: iLuv loves U

In an industry where daft names and meaningless monikers are commonplace there are few as vapid as IMJ Japan's iLuv-i182WHT video recorder for mobile devices. That seemingly random collection of characters, however, is fortunate in that it's attached to a very capable little product.

The ¥22,800 recorder combines a base unit that features a dock for the ubiquitous iPod (5G) and S-Video and composite ports with an adapter that fits the dock to accommodate various memory cards and USB devices, including the PlayStation Portable.

The idea is really pretty simple – just connect a video source, such as a TV, DV video camera or set-top box, to the base unit, plug in either an iPod or the adapter and a PSP, PMP, USB drive or whatever and hit the record button. There's also an off timer button to tell the iLuv (we'll settle on that) when to stop shuttling digital video across the gulf.

Admittedly, the encoding format and video size need to be set by connecting the kit to a PC (or Mac, amazingly) and firing up the supplied software, but it's still a smart way of getting video onto a portable device.

For the record, the permutations are vast – various tweaks on the MPEG-4 theme and H.263 encoding, three resolution settings for each, three possible bitrates to determine file size/quality, and SD card, Memory Stick, USB, PSP and iPod as possible destinations. Still doesn't make those home videos any more tolerable though.

Samsung does 64GB 1.8in flash drive, says SSD market to explode within three years

Suvil is one of those firms that produces plenty of the little bits and pieces you never knew you wanted. One case in point is the Hong Kong company's ClipFree iAudio BT (top) Bluetooth add-on for pretty much any piece of kit with an audio output. We took a quick look at the gear this morning and were pleasantly suprised.

The ClipFree does the whole BT thing just the way it should — the package includes a dongle for a stereo, cellphone or whatever, a clip-on receiver, both in- and over-ear headphones and a couple of different audio jacks, so connectivity is simple.

Performance is fine over 5m or so, but you might not want to push it to the claimed 10m range, and audio is generally clear. The auto-switching ability — between an audio source and an incoming call, for example — is smartly done and battery life is reasonable at four hours of use or 120 on standby.

Suvil also has a range of Wi-Fi necessities, such as the Wi-Fi Hunter (below), a bare-bones key-chain 802.11 b/g detector. Currently, we only have pricing in Euros (€89 for the ClipFree and €15 for the key chain) but US and Japan readers can expect to see Suvil gear in the stores any day now.

0602411399March 27 is a significant day for Korea’s Samsung, as it holds its annual Mobile Solution Forum in Taipei today to announce the hottest imminent new products and technologies.

Foremost among those revealed this morning is a larger, faster solid state drive (SSD) that uses flash memory to replace the spinning platters in conventional hard disks.

The new 1.8in SSD is the largest yet from a major manufacturer, coming in at the 64GB mark, which brings the technology ever closer in size to typical HDD territory. The drive uses eight gigabit single-level-cell NAND flash memory chips, which allows it to operate considerably faster than Samsung’s previous-generation 32GB SSD.

Confirming that the 64GB SSD is faster than conventional hard drives, Samsung also noted that its read and write speeds are 20 and 60 per cent faster than the previous model.

After production begins in the second quarter of this year the most likely destination for the new drive is, of course, in high-end rugged laptop computers, which will come at a premium price, but there are other options.

Samsung says SSDs in the 8 to 16GB range will end up in car GPS systems and camcorders, while flash drives with hundreds of gigabytes of storage will eventually be used in servers.

If anyone is wondering why the sudden upsurge in interest in SSDs, Samsung’s footnote shines some light on the reason. The predicted value of the SSD market this year is an insignificant (to them) US$200 million, but that’s set to rise to $6.8 billion by 2010.

This wonderful 2GB flash DAP has been designed by Chinese company called Teclast. It's name is C280 and is absolutely a Frankenstein device that devices the audio processor from the T29 into the slightly modified body of the C260.

The player features a 2.4-inch QVGA display (320 x 240), FM tuner and recorder, microSD card expansion slot, line-in recording feature, 12-hour battery life, text viewer, and a couple of unnamed games. With support for MP3 and WMA audio as well as AVI video files, the 3.1" x 1.9" x 0.4" player will be up for the taking later this month in China for an astonishingly low price of just $65.

The HTC lineup for 2007 will obviously continue to attract interest as new models continue to make waves throughout the PDA world. Rumors about their latest mobiles are now abundant and more info is available on the HTC Wings and the HTC Erato plus some info on the yet unknown HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius).

The real news is the info about the highly interesting HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius). The whopping 3.5" 65K TFT display may only make users feel sorry that it comes with a QVGA resolution only. Rest assured as the device is supposed to have quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus 3G and Wi-Fi and would be powered by a 400MHz Samsung processor. Running on the Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS, the HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius) would also be equipped with a 2 megapixel camera. The HTC P6500 (HTC Sirius) is expected in August 2007.

The other two devices are smartphones and many of you may already heard rumors about them. The HTC Erato is the more interesting one. Up until now even its code name has remained unknown. The device is to be released as HTC S420 and is supposed to be powered by a 400MHz Samsung processor and Windows Mobile 6 Standard. It should also come equipped with a 2.4" 65K colors TFT display with a QVGA resolution. The HTC S420 (HTC Erato) would have quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus 3G/HSDPA-enabled telephony. An FM radio, a microSD memory card slot, a 2 megapixel camera and the integrated Sirf Star III GPS receiver add nicely to the picture. The HTC S420 (HTC Erato) is expected in April 2007.

The HTC S730 (HTC Wings) would be the possible successor of the HTC S710 (HTC Vox). It would feature the same dual keypad design as the S710 but will be powered by the more powerful Samsung 400MHz processor and would again run on Windows Mobile 6 Standard. As far as connectivity is concerned it comes with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus 3G and HSDPA and Wi-Fi. It would also boast a 2 megapixel camera and an integrated Sirf Star III GPS receiver. Basically the only thing that would separate it from being a fully-fledged PocketPC is the lack of toucscreen capability which is not a necessary bad thing since many users prefer to do without a stylus. The HTC S730 (HTC Wings) is expected in July 2007.

Peapod DAP can handle vicious babies, but Apple legal?

You'd think that Apple's, um, loving oversight of its trademarks and trademark applications would scare potential DAP manufacturers away from using any combination of the letters p, o, and d in their product name, so we assume that Calgary-based Peapod Toys hasn't been following the American legal scene all that closely. In any event, the small company has just announced its self-titled, baby-targeted MP3 player at the International Toy Fair, which allows the one-and-under crowd to rock out to up to two hours of their favorite Raffi tunes. But infants and electronics go together like elephants and antique shops, you say? Not to worry: the Peapod is wrapped in a soft rubber shell that promises to protect it from mushed carrots, multiple collisions with the wall, and even the occasional teething session. It also sports a built in speaker (babies + headphone wires = potential disaster), a claimed 40 hours of battery life from a single AA, and support for select educational content available on the Peapod website. No word so far on price or release, but we'll go out on a limb and assume that we're looking at "cheap" and "soon," respectively.

i-mate goes deep with Ultimate line, five models promised

i-mate is taking a pretty interesting approach with its newest range of Windows Mobile devices -- the WM6-equipped "Ultimate" range -- by shoving a full five models out the door, all differing only in form factor. Clockwise from the upper left, we have all five in purely theoretical, rendered form: the 5150, 6150, 7150, 9150, and 8150. The strategy makes sense, really; everyone wants a solid spec sheet, but getting everyone to agree on a single shape is an exercise in futility. With 256MB of ROM, VGA displays across the board, tri-band 3G radios, Bluetooth 2.0, and FM radios, the Ultimates definitely hold their own in the spec department -- the only question, then, is whether they've nailed the industrial design. The first model being shown all public-like, the 5150 slider, is admittedly an acquired taste, but some of the others really caught our eyes (7150 and 9150, we're looking at you).

Lenovo shows Windows Mobile 6 offerings

Lenovo's been pushing phones in its native China for some time -- including some bearing Windows Mobile -- and the company is among Microsoft's launch partners for version six at 3GSM this week. Details are slim for both of these units, but we're guessing the Standard device on the right will be destined for Russia on account of its rather, um... Russia-ish keypad. The Professional handset on the left, though, we're going to call the "Peacemaker." We're not sure exactly how a Google logo found its way prominently onto the frontside of a Microsoft-powered handset, but hey, if all parties involved are cool with that, we're cool with that, too.

Not-yet-airborne Virgin America invited us to check out the way-decked Airbus A320 with Red prototype in-flight entertainment system that's parked at SFO right now. They definitely weren't kidding when they said it's got it all: movies on demand, pervasive music playlists, in-seat messaging with a QWERTY controller, touchscreen Linux consoles with games, the works. RIM patent applications reveal future Blackberry possibilities

RIM isn't usually one for revealing long term plans, but a pair of recent patent applications from the company look to at least give some indication of where the company may be headed with its beloved Blackberry (don't worry, they all still have keypads). The first and more recent of the two is the one you see sketched out above, described by the company simply as a "mobile device with rotatable keyboard." That bit of innovation means that means that the jumble of letters and digits you see on the keypad up there will line up to suit how you're using the device, with the numbers legible in flip phone mode, and the letters readable with the keypad swung out for some serious text-entering, also providing a bit of added comfort. The second patent filing (seen after the break) takes the dual keyboard concept one step further, with a standard numeric keypad on the face of the device and a full-on QWERTY keyboard hidden on the back of the handheld that can be flipped out when needed. Of course, these being patent applications, there's not telling when or if either of them will actually make it to market, so don't get your hopes up too much.

DIY Valentines

Often considered a marketing invention to help boost sales in an otherwise slow economic period for retailers, Valentine's Day needn't be another excuse to express love through our capalitistic, consumeristic ways. There are plenty of options to give without hitting the mall, so this year CH decided to put together a list of homemade Valentines gifts (and kits).

Lovebird Candles (pictured above right), featured in the current issue of ReadyMade, transform tall boy cans and a metal ashtray into a silver votive that projects a romantic image onto walls. Our friends at the magazine were kind enough to make a pdf of the project exclusively for CH readers, which is available for a free download here.

Make the luxury of breakfast in bed painfully cute with heart-shaped fried eggs (left). With a heart shaped-cookie cutter and a little experience in the kitchen, you can even make the whole breakfast love-themed by using the same technique to make heart shaped pancakes and toast. If the eventual demise of flowers depresses you or your Valentine, something more permanent might win their heart. We've seen flowers made out of paper and even Tampons, but never out of junk. These Junk Box Flowers (above right) might not smell as nice, but will last longer as a token of affection. This one is made from parts of a hard drive, floppy disks, thin metal, brass wire and glue, but plenty of household objects lying around make good substitutes. We all have a few hundred, possibly thousands, of photos locked up in our hard drives or buried in Flickr pages. A Digital Photo Frame (above left) uses an old laptop and an application called Slickr to display a rotating selection of photos of you and your Valentine. This isn't your father's Swiss Army knife. Check out the nine-inch, two-pound "blade" that sports 85 unique tools

It seems like Wenger wants you to do one thing: throw out your old knives. Actually, it wants you to do several things: throw out your bike tools, your toiletries, your laser pointer and so on, because you can find all of these instruments in a huge Swiss Army knife, which includes every tool the company makes. Wenger is calling the contraption “Giant Knife Version 1.0.” It debuted with all 85 features and can perform hundreds of functions.

Today's CH selection from Popular Science's recent Best of What's New 2006 is Logitech's MX Revolution. After hearing the buzz about this multi-functional new device, CH decided to test it out for ourselves.

With a rechargable lithium-ion battery and a wireless USB connection, the MX Revolution has the basics of what you'd expect from a hi-tech mouse. But the real draw are the programmable buttons (dowloadable software's required) and engineering innovations.

Over two years in development, the main feature is a central scroll wheel, which switches between "hyper-fast" and slow speeds with a downward click. But toggling between speeds with the MX Revolution is something you probably won't have to do for yourself that often. Using "SmartShift" technology, the mouse actually detects the software you're using on the computer and switches to the appropriate speed. When you scroll quickly, the wheel disengages so as not to spin out of control and, if you leave it spinning, it stops with a simple touch. Moving side to side as well, the wheel's also great for navigating horizontally around programs like Photoshop.

While all the buttons can be customized to perform a variety of functions, they're all designed to work intuitively to enable easy desktop navigation. A second thumb-controlled wheel, located on the side, enables easy flipping between applications with a toggle motion and a central click. For searching, a dedicated button directly below the main wheel can be customized to use the program of your choice, which is especially handy for Microsoft programs that don't have built-in Google searches. And two other programmable side buttons are useful for making modified keystrokes into one-click operations.

For $99, there are more inexpensive options out there, but none that provide so many ways to navigate so fluidly. Pick one up from Logitech.

Vita Audio R1 DAB

Tivoli's clever integration of features like Satellite Radio and good looks into their tabletop powered speakers has made their products some of the more popular ones on the market. With the arrival last year of Vita Audio 's R1 DAB, they have some competition. Their aim "to design and build products that we ourselves would be proud to own" and to develop high-performance products with "intuitive operation and utilities that are of real benefit rather than frivolous features that may seldom be used" are the kind of values we can get behind—and their philosophy comes through in the new R1 DAB. Using a 'RotoDial' interface, tuning channels (including the U.K.'s Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system), switching between inputs and setting alarm and clock functions are all intuitively executed. A front-mounted LCD panel displays info about broadcasts (RDS or Radio Data System) and time and a headphone and an auxiliary jack (also on the front) make it easy (unlike Tivoli's iPal's rear inputs) to connect external devices like mp3 players. For better sound gold-plated RCA inputs in the rear take advantage of their state-of-the-art loudspeaker design. The R1 DAB is available in walnut and cherry veneer, grey and red (pictured), which Paul Smith sells for £180.

coo.boo Digital Cookbook

You might have heard, but soon there will no longer be a need to risk your laptop in precarious situations in the kitchen. Modeled after a spatula, coo.boo is a digital cookbook that fits into the kitchen environment better than any laptop or printed cookbook. Recipes stored on the user’s computer are automatically synchronized through a wireless docking station and displayed on the face of the device. Digital function allows the cook to choose the degree of support wanted, from simply displaying recipes to full audiovisual cooking lessons. Not fragile like other high-tech digital devices, coo.boo is washable and can be placed on the counter top or hung up next to other kitchen utensils. Designed by Philipp Gilgen, a student at the University of Applied Sciences in Northwestern Switzerland, it recently won the IF Concept Award 2007. Still in prototype stage, there is no word yet on release or price.

The recent trend in mobile devices design is clear - make it as slim as it gets. Sony Ericsson long stood aside from the race for the slimmest mobile phone. Instead they preferred giving priority to their Walkman-branded music phones, cameraphones or both. But that was up until now. Now we are witnessing the incorporation of the famous portable music brand Walkman into one of the slimmest mobile handsets on the market. It comes as no surprise as rumors and leaked photos and info on the new handset have been flooding the Internet for quite some time now. And finally we got it - the Sony Ericsson W880 itself. And it's up to us to see how this slim baby performs on the treadmill.

The announcement of the Sony Ericsson W880 was just today and we are more than proud to present you with an exclusive GSMArena review for your reading pleasure. Bear in mind that the test handset we got was a stable beta version and it is possible that there might be some minor differences in the final retail version.

The retail package of the Sony Ericsson W880 will include 1GB Memory Stick Micro M2 card, a USB cable, and a stereo headset.

The Sony Ericsson W880 will be available in two color variations - black and silver. The one we got to test was the black version. In fact black is the color of the front panel only - the entire back panel is styled in dark orange - the proprietary Walkman color.

Besides the regular Sony Ericsson W880 there will also be a version designated as Sony Ericsson W888. It will be manufactured for the Chinese market and will not include 3G connectivity and video telephony.

Back to basics

The Sony Ericsson W880 has a trendy design which manages to please the eye at the very first sight. The front panel is made of brushed aluminum which adds to fashionable looks and provides for a rather solid construction while at the same time the W880 is still lightweight and really slim. It measures 103 x 47 x 9.4 mm and weighs only 71 g. Unlike other slim mobile phones on the market it doesn't compensate for it's ultra slim body with larger body width or body length. The Motorola RAZR for example is rather wide; the Motorola KRZR is rather long, while the mobiles in the Samsung Ultra line are both too long and wide. The only other mobiles with a similar ultra slim form factor are Samsung P310, the LG KG320 and the LG KE820.

The central place of the front panel of the Sony Ericsson W880 is taken by the 1.8" 262K colors TFT display with a QVGA resolution. Above it you can see the VGA camera for making video calls and the in-call speaker grill.

Samsung X830 review: The small big player

The controversial Samsung X830 won’t leave you indifferent. It is a MP3 player with 1 GB of built-in memory on one hand, and a mobile phone, supporting Bluetooth and EDGE on the other hand. The unusual design also draws the attention – it will amuse some, while it will definitely inspire others.

The topic of the this year’s Christmas time when it comes to mobile communications was clearly the music player capabilities of mobile phones. After the music-oriented models such as 5200 and 5300, the specially designed smart phones such as 3250 Xpress Music and 5500 Sport Music Edition of the Finnish brand Nokia and after the top Sony Ericsson W850i and W950i Walkmans, here comes the Korean Samsung. The untraditional X830 model again predisposes to thoughts, whether the music players’ integration into the world of mobile phones won’t take to an exactly opposite directi.

We have already met

The X830 concept comes from the SPH-S4300 model, being available from the first quarter of 2006 in Korea; we have already seen this model on the CeBIT Fair in Hanover. Physically, Samsung appears more like a music player than like a mobile. The multimedia functions in a phone are essential for a certain group of people. On principle, however, we expect that the phone functions won’t suffer from the multimedia ones. Unfortunately, the manufacturers often do this.

The overall phone design is contradictory in many ways. To some it may look stylish, to others – the new form may look rather controversial. True fact is that the dimensions of 84 x 30 x 19 mm are at least unusual and hardly remind of an ordinary phone. I thought that the Samsung weighs less at first sight. The weight of 72 g however was no such a big surprise, having in mind the phone size. Yet, from current models it compares only to Sony Ericsson J100 in terms of weight.

According to the available information Samsung X830 will be sold in six color variants: blue, green, orange, pink, white and black. I would unambiguously prefer the more conservative black variant. I didn’t like much the orange-silver cover of the sample model we had for testing.

Ah, those swivel hinges

There aren’t many models with rotating construction on the market. Unfortunately the Samsung X830 swivel mechanism is not very successful. The disadvantages aren’t visible at common manipulation, but the construction won’t stand at thorough testing. The deflections in closed, semi open and fully open positions may be felt clearly and you have to get used to them in the phone’s everyday use. Moreover, while in closed position the lock mechanism does its job satisfactory, but when opened, it fails to lock the upper part in an upright position. A little consolation is the fact, that rotating it about ten degrees activates the opening mechanism, which provides the movement to the upper position side. So, you don’t have to push it all the way up.

Opening the phone with one hand is easy due to its width of only 30 mm. It’s enough to turn the phone with display down and push with thumb to the right side board. It’s easy for right-handers; left-handed people have to make bigger effort. Right thumb manipulation is after all simpler than pushing with the other left hand fingers.

The outsides

The Samsung body is made of plastic covers, supplemented by metal buttons. One such button serves for locking the music player controls; the lower edge of the same side features the traditional eyelet for a neck strip. The opposite side incorporates two buttons, intended for volume control. The cover of the common connector for headphones, data cable and charger is situated above them.

To loosen the battery cover, use the buttons, located on the upper. They seem more as dummy buttons, because pressing them is practically impossible and removing the battery will cost you some more efforts and strain. The battery cover takes ? of the mobile’s back side; the built-in camera lens is located on the remaining area.

The provided battery is Li-Ion with capacity of 800 mAh and maximum indicated lifetime of 120 h in stand-by and 3 h of talk time. The real values move about two and a half days in stand-by mode. Using the music functions shortens the battery charging cycle, of course, but still it easily lasts one day without need to be charged.

Measuring 104 x 50 x 16.4mm, the F700 would have an innovative touchscreen functionality called VibeTonz which allows user to actually feel the buttons on the touchscreen and pressing them produces slight vibrations for enhanced user friendliness. Furthermore the interface would feature drag-n-drop functionality which would enable users to control almost all of the features of the mobile without the need for stylus.

Samsung F700

The idea behind Samsung F700 surely reminds of the famous Apple iPhone but it doesn't seem as a copy of the latter. Looking at the form factor the influence by the HTC PocketPCs seems a lot stronger. The Sony Ericsson K550 is a feature-rich cameraphone with an enjoyable 2 megapixel camera, nice imaging applications, FM radio and a memory card slot. And all that at a reasonable price that may attract your attention. Anyways, if we’ve managed to grab it, feel free to join us on a tour with the K800’s little brother.

The Cyber-shot revolution has done only good to the Sony Ericsson sales. It proved rather successful and that is the reason why the manufacturer naturally releases a more affordable cameraphone to the masses. Sony Ericsson continue their long line of bar phones which are either camera or music-oriented with the K550. The midrange K-series continuation comes again in a small shell with a tight fit waist. At only 14 mm thickness, it surely packs in some nice features. So let’s continue with our review, but bear in mind that in the case of Sony Ericsson the Cyber-shot logo does not necessarily mean great camera performance but enhanced imaging capabilities.

The Sony Ericsson K550 is going to be produced in two distinct versions. The first one is the K550i and the second one the K550im which is an i-mode version of the mobile and is the first i-mode phone by the manufacturer bearing that Cyber-shot logo. The test handset we received is in fact namely that i-mode version. It carries certain differences and as such those will be duly noted. Nevertheless, it gives us pretty much the full picture about the more widely-distributed would-be version – K550i.

An impressive start

Sony Ericsson K550 leaves nice impression at first sight. It measures 102 x 46 x 14 mm and weighs only 85 g. The handset design is styled with the new Sony Ericsson style – circular navigation keys and thin metallic alphanumeric keys. This is obviously the design that is going to reign in the Sony Ericsson camp this year as we see it on almost all their latest bar-shaped mobiles.

LG KE850 Prada goes official

Today LG officially confirmed their upcoming LG Prada phone. Featuring a full touch-control design, the new handset is the result from the collaboration between the Korean manufacturer and the Prada design team.

Yesterday at the IF product design awards the LG Prada mobile was first seen designated as the LG KE850. The unique thing about it is the large touchcreen menu interface which eliminates the need for a conventional keypad whatsoever. We cannot help but think about the newly announced iPhone by Apple which though would much larger and would run under the OS X. The LG KE850 Prada phone on the other hand would be only 12 mm run with a Macromedia Flash user interface.

The Prada phone by LG (KE850) would feature a large 3" LCD touchscreen display with yet unknown resolution and would also have a 2 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach optics and a microSD memory card slot. The most interesting thing about the display itself is that it's made using the capacitive touchscreen technology. What that means is that the screen uses electroconductivity to sense your touch - much like the touchpad on the popular LG Chocolate. This technology is made to be used with fingers only, so the use of a stylus is out of the question whatsoever.

[I have just heard from one of the programmers of the phone that Tetris was in the phone during development, but it was removed before it was produced. Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

Sony Ericsson falls in the market niche of highly functional devices for which size is not that important. It's a camera phone and the devices we like to call camera phones are phones that boast a digital camera that's on par with the low-end digital cameras on the market. Speaking of camera phones, nowadays we see an increase in the maximum image resolution. We see implementation of new features which not long ago belonged to the world of the digital cameras only - such as specific scene modes, xenon flash, auto focus. Recently announced Nokia multimedia phones would even have optical zoom. The camera functionalities of the mobile phones are becoming increasingly important since the battle for the ultimate multimedia device continues - a device that can take great pictures, capture hi-res video, one that plays high-quality music, one that you can browse photos or play games on, one that helps you organize your daily schedule and browse the Internet, and in the same time functions equally well as a regular phone. Right about now buying a new mobile phone is always a bit of a trade-off on some of those things. There is no perfect phone.

In today's review we are going to take a look at a handset that makes a big stride in the quest for the ideal mobile multimedia device - a camera phone that still has its flaws, of course, but that shows us clearly the direction in which the industry is going to and thus turns into a symbolic device for us. Yes, we are talking about the Sony Ericson K800 Cyber-shot mobile phone. It has GPRS and UMTS support, memory card slot, great camera, a great MP3 player, stereo Bluetooth support, FM radio, integrated image blogging service and Google search and last but not least - a great 3.2 megapixel camera with an integrated real xenon flash.

The phone will be manufactured in two versions - one will be designated K800 and the other one - K790. The difference between the two is that the first one is produced with 3G UMTS support and a second VGA camera for video calls but no EDGE support, while K790 will have only EDGE support. The availability of the two models would be market-dependent, of course.

Before we start, though, I should warn you that the phone we tested was a beta version so there are some bugs we found and we are more than sure that they would be fixed in the final version. We won't mention those as we go along the review though, because the bugs are a pretty common thing in a pre-release version. As regards the retail package, the box should include a stereo headset, a USB cable and a 64MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card along with a Memory Stick Duo Pro adapter but as we have always said - the contents of the retail package are market and country dependant.
All those numbers

The phone design follows the trend of all K-series phones of SE. It's really nice and it's only half a centimeter longer than the well-known K750, although at first sight it seems a lot bigger than K750. Otherwise the measures of both phones are pretty close to one another. K800 has dimensions of 105 x 47 x 22 mm and weighs 115 g. Just for comparison, the dimensions of K750 are 100 x 46 x 20.5 mm, while its weight is 99 g.

We got to admit that the phone's construction is pretty solid and the construction quality deserves a compliment. The weight on the other hand is perfectly balanced and doesn't feel much at all.

Nokia at CES - N93i, N76, N800 tablet

Today at CES 2007 held in Las Vegas, USA, Nokia announced some new additions to their N-series lineup - the Nokia N93i and the Nokia N76 plus the Nokia 6131 NFC and the Nokia N800 Internet tablet.

The 40th annual Consumer Electronics Show, a major international technologies event, hosted the announcement of several new Nokia devices - the updated version of the Nokia N93, the new Nokia N76, the Nokia 6131 NFC and the internet tablet Nokia N800.

The Nokia N93i is the Nokia's answer to all the criticism that the original N93 received due to its hefty size and weight. The updated camcorder, as we like to call it, due to its unique video capturing capabilities, has obviously been on a strict diet since now it comes a whole 10 mm shorter, 3 mm thinner and weighs 17 g less. Furthermore, the retail package of the Nokia N93i would now include 1GB miniSD card instead of the original 128MB one. The difference in size was in fact achieved by using a smaller capacity battery which is not that good idea since the N93 didn't score well in that department even with the original 1100mAh. The new Nokia N93i battery life would possibly be even worse thanks to the new power-hungry 16 million colors TFT display it would be equipped with. The Nokia N93 would be the first of the Nokia mobiles that would come preconfigured for use with the new direct image & video uploading service Vox. The Nokia N93i is expected to start shipping in the first quarter of 2007 with an estimated sales price of approximately 600EUR.

The Nokia N76 is the truly new addition to the N-series. It's a stylish ultra slim clamshell, running on the Symbian 9.1 S60UI. The Nokia N76 would be a music-oriented device which is clearly stated through the presence of dedicated music keys on the handset cover. It would also sport a 2.4" 16M colors TFT display, a 2 megapixel camera, a secondary QVGA camera for video calls, and a FM radio. The connectivity features of the new slim Nokia would include quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus UMTS, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB. The new Nokia N76 would come in an elegant design with a thickness of 13.7 mm which would make it a tad slimmer than the once famous Motorola RAZR. The Nokia N76 is expected to start shipping in the first quarter of 2007 with an estimated sales price of approximately 390 EUR.

The Nokia 6131 NFC is the next example in Nokia's strive for adopting the latest technologies in their product line. The NFC in the model designation stands for Near Field Communications technology which should enable information sharing, service initiation and payment & ticketing capability directly from the portable device itself. As the NFC forum describes it: "The Near Field Communication (NFC) is a new, short-range wireless connectivity technology that evolved from a combination of existing contactless identification and interconnection technologies. Operating at 13.56 MHz and transferring data at up to 424 Kbits/second, NFC provides intuitive, simple, and safe communication between electronic devices. NFC is both a "read" and "write" technology. Communication between two NFC-compatible devices occurs when they are brought within four centimeters of one another: a simple wave or touch can establish an NFC connection which is then compatible with other known wireless technologies such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. NFC can be used with a variety of devices, from mobile phones that enable payment or transfer information to digital cameras that send their photos to a TV set with just a touch." The NFC version of the Nokia 6131 boasts the same characteristics as the original one - quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Infrared and FM radio. The Nokia 6131 NFC is expected to be available in select markets in the first quarter of 2007 for approximately 260 EUR.

The N800 Internet Tablet is a portable multimedia device based on the Internet Tablet OS 2007 (the Nokia's desktop Linux based OS code-named Maemo). It would measure 144/75/13 mm and would weigh 206 g. The N800 would be equipped with a 65K wide screen touchscreen TFT display with a resolution of 800x480 pixels and would have 128MB ROM and 256MB flash memory expandable with the two integrated memory slots. The N800 won't have a phone hardware but some attractive features include stereo speakers, VOIP calls with an integrated webcam, fullscreen QWERTY keyboard and various connectivity options. The Nokia N800 is commercially available immediat?lly in the United States and in selected markets in Europe at estimated retail price of 399 EUR/USD.

Nokia 5300 review: Hop on the music express

Being part of the revamped XpressMusic line, the Nokia 5300 is expressive more than ever and is one great example of how you can have fun with your mobile phone. The dedicated music keys make a sure statement about the music-orientation of the handset. And if that is not enough you can always count on the 1.3 megapixel camera to capture your precious moments and view them on the TFT display with QVGA resolution. Connectivity is at its highest here, since the new Finnish music slider is armed with a mini-USB jack, a standard 3.5mm audio jack and even with stereo Bluetooth support. If the price is right, it really sounds like a good bargain, right? Well, you are not far from the truth.

Nokia has been working hard on developing and promoting their XpressMusic line of mobile phones in a determined way to fight back the Sony Ericsson's Walkman reign in this market niche. The two new handsets called Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, Nokia 5200 XpressMusic and the updated Nokia 3250 XpressMusic now constitute a serious attempt to establish the Finnish manufacturer mobiles on the music phones market. We won't comment on the Nokia 3250 for now since the two other mobiles are of much more interest to us, being brand new models. The Nokia 5200 and 5300 have pretty much the same design. The 5200 is more of a Lite version and is targeted at the budget-conscious buyers, while the Nokia 5300 is a representative of the midrange mobile phones in terms of price and equipment.

Up for now, the Walkman mobiles are still the leading music solution so don't expect these XpressMusic devices to overthrow the king of this realm. It seems though that Nokia has been putting some very serious efforts in campaigning their new handsets and as rumors go, the Finnish engineers have a few more devices up their sleeve.

The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is an exciting new phone for several reasons. Firstly, it is the first XpressMusic device to come up under the non-smartphone S40 user interface of the Finnish brand. Secondly, the slider form factor leaves it with no direct competitors in the Walkman camp in the respective price range. And finally, it offers features such as stereo Bluetooth support and 3.5 mm audio jack adapter. In fact, there is not even one Walkman mobile to have a standard mini-USB port. That practically makes the Nokia 5300 a leading offering in the midrange music class and it's up to us to see how it copes with the challenge.

The Nokia 5300 is offered only in matt white color with a choice of two trimmings - red and dark grey. The trimmings in fact include only the central frame surrounding the display which incorporates the dedicated side multimedia keys. The handset we got to review was the one in white/grey color combination. The design of 5300 is sporty and somewhat reminds us of the Sony Ericsson W710. There is no doubt that it is aimed at the young audience and most probably it won't appeal to any other group of consumers. Nokia marketing campaign makes every effort to underline the fact that this line of devices is targeted at young people having fun.

The retail package of Nokia 5300 should include a Nokia stereo headset HS-47, a standard 3.5 mm audio jack adapter and a microSD card with a size that would vary according to the region. The one we had in our office had a card with a capacity of 256MB. There is no USB data cable in the package, but since it is a standard 5-pin mini-USB one, the odds are that you may already have gotten one with your digital camera or MP3 player. And you can always buy one for cheap.
A soap bar in shape and size

The Nokia 5300 doesn't exactly rely on its slimness to attract attention. It measures 92.4 x 48.2 x 20.7 mm, which in fact makes it rather thick. But it's rather its body design than actually the thickness itself that's to blame, since it's even a few millimeters shorter and slimmer than Sony Ericsson W850. The weight of 106 g is also acceptable and it is by no means a heavy phone or anything.

In terms of construction, well… construction has not always been the brightest side of a slider. In this case the mobile body is perfectly stable and rock solid when opened, but when closed it did seem to play a little - but not that much to turn you down.

The front panel of the phone is the one that might attract the most attention. In the upper part, above the display, there are two small holes, which in fact are the in-call speaker apertures. In the lower part there are four control keys and the navigation D-pad. The upper set of keys act as context keys for interacting with the phone's interface while the lower set are the call keys for accepting and ending calls. Just beside the red one there is a small hole which is in fact the microphone aperture. Opening the handset reveals the alphanumeric keypad, which is made out of the same material as the body. It is rather comfortable to work with, but more on navigation and keypad is to come later on in the review.

On the left side of the display, you can see the designations of the dedicated music keys. Those keys in fact are positioned on the phone's side and are covered with rubber while in the same time they are marked with small buds. The grey frame around the display is made out of plastic and only the keys themselves are covered with rubber. On the lower portion of the phone's body, you can see the 2.5 mm audio jack (you need the supplied adapter to go to 3.5 mm).

The right side of the handset incorporates the two volume keys and the camera shutter key. Those keys are also covered with rubber. Besides controlling the volume levels, the volume keys have some other predefined functions. A longer press on the Minus key activates the voice dialing, while a longer press on the Plus key lists the Push-to-talk contacts. It's worth mentioning that you can also activate the voice dialing by a longer press on the green soft key on the front panel - it's up to your choice. The Plus key's secondary function works also when you are browsing the menu, while the Minus key and the Camera release key don't - you have to be in standby mode to use those. Behind the back panel cover, you can see the standard Li-Ion Nokia BL-5B battery with a capacity of 760 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the battery should last up to 223 hours of standby mode and up to 3.2 hours of talk time. Furthermore, it should provide up to 12 hours of play time. The actual play time is around 9 hours which is far worse than the Sony Ericsson Walkman player which have a dedicated music playing uptime of more than 20 hours. In our case when using the Nokia 5300 for around 15 minutes of calls a day and occasionally listening to music for another 15 minutes a day, the battery lasted about full 4 days, which is more than Sony Ericsson W850 when used in similar conditions. And those are the results which include some heavy testing on our side, so the achieved battery life is impressive.

The memory card slot is located under the back panel cover too just beside the hologram Nokia sticker on the battery. The slot is truly hot swappable as it proved in our tests. The SIM card bed is located besides the camera lens and the card itself gets locked by a special latch, which makes putting it in or taking it out very easy.

Samsung announced their full Le Fleur series, which represents a stylish trio of elegant mobiles targeted specifically at women. The three handsets are the new Samsung E570 and Samsung E420, as well as the Samsung E500 which is already officially released. The Le Fleur series is a continuation of the Samsung concept that a woman should have an expressive, feminine mobile to suit her style. This concept was born back in the day with the first feminine mobile Samsung A400, and later on revived with Samsung E530, Samsung E410, Samsung T500 among others.

The Samsung E570 is a fashionable handset following the design of Samsung E530. It has tri-band GSM/GPRS support, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a 1.8" 262K colors TFT display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. At CES 2007 Las Vegas Motorola joined the gang and presented the successor of the popular RIZR Z3 - the MOTORIZR Z6. The new slider is part of the new MOTOMUSIC platform and comes along with the updated EDGE version of the Motorola MING A1200 model. It seems that Motorola would keep their marketing strategy of producing slightly updated version to their existing handsets instead of making entirely new mobiles from scratch. The prospects of a new group of music-oriented devices sounds exciting since this is the current
trend on the market and Motorola didn't have such mobiles up until now.

The Motorola RIZR Z6 will run on a new Linux-Java-based user interface and promises enhanced music experience featuring connectivity with Windows Media Player 11 and supporting Janus DRM. It will have the same design as its predecessor RIZR Z3 with almost the same size but it will weigh 10 g less. The new RIZR Z6 will have an improved display - this time with QVGA resolution, but it will retain the 2 megapixel camera of the predecessor. We hope that there would be some improvement in the camera quality department too since the RIZR Z3 deserved some criticism along that line of functionality. The MOTORIZR Z6 is expected to be available in the first half of 2007.

Revealing the Headphone and Car-Kit menus

Please note that if you do these next tricks, the new menus can't be erased without retoring the factory default settings. To do these tricks you need to short-circuit the pins on the bottom of the phone next to where you plug in you charger.

1. To activate the "Headset" menu, you need to short-circuit pins "3" and "4". After a short time the word "Headset" will be shown in the display. Menu 3-6 is now enabled.

2. To activate the "Car" menu, you need to short-circuit pins "4" and "5". After a short time the word "Car" will be shown in the display. Menu 3-7 is now enabled.

THE REBOOT TRICK

This should work on all software versions of the 6110.

1. Go to the Calendar (Menu-8)

2. Make a note or reminder.

3. Enter some text into the edit box.

4. Hold "Clear" until the whole text is cleared, then press "Back".

5. Press "0". The main screen will now be showing but a space appears on the screen. (you can't see it)

6. Enter 4 digits (e.g. 1234).

7. Use the down arrow to move the cursor to the left side of the numbers and the space (Down arrow twice).

8. Now enter 6 digits and press the call button.

Wait for a few seconds, the screen should start to flash and reboots. It should alsowork on other menus like the "Profiles" menu.

EFR CALL QUALITY

To activate EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) Enter the code-

This improves call quality but decreases batterylife by about 5%

THE JAMES BOND TRICK

If you short-circuit theleft middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying.

NETWORK MONITOR

There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.

Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
Take apart the phone.
De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64).
Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup).
If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF".
If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF".
Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone,
Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.

The Network Monitor gives you the following information.

Carrier number
MS RX Level in DBM
Received signal quality
MS TX power level
C1 (Path loss criterion, used for cell selection and reselection). The range is -99 to 99.
RTL (Radio link timeout).
Timeslot
Indication of the transmitter status
Information on the Network parameters.
TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity).
Cell identification (Cell ID, Number of cells being used).
MCC (Mobile country code)
MCN (Mobile network code)
LAC (Location area code)
Ciphering (On/Off)
Hopping (On/Off)
DTX (On/Off)
Discard cell barred information

CHECK SIM-LOCK

Note - If you bought your Nokia on UK Vodafone or UK Cellnet you do not need to check this because they both transmit on GSM900, and they don't lock the phones. However if you bought your phone on UK Orange or UK One2one your phone may be blocked. The reason is that they both transmitt on GSM1800. To make a call on GSM1800 you need what is known as a "Dual band" phone. A dual band phone is able to transmit on both GSM900 and GSM1800, so they lock the phones so you can't use it with any other network simcard. If you find that your phone is locked you can try different software to unlock it. (we havn't found one that works yet), or you can ask your service provider who will gladly exchange the 10 digit code for about £35.

This is how to check the status of the 4 different locks. Aslo don't try entering the wrong number, because after 3 times it will block the phone for good.

The master code is a secret code. The code has 10 digits, To read out the sim-lock status you can enter every combination you want!

"Y" Shows the status of the network-lock. Here you can enter a number from "1" to "4". The "4" is for the sim-card lock.
